Writing Tip #2

Read.

Read to expand your mind. Read to expand your vocabulary.

When I was child in elementary school I use to read the dictionary. I would write down the word and then the definition. I expanded my vocabulary this way and it helped me to pass vocabulary test in school.

I loved doing this because I was able to see how much a word’s meaning can vary from definition to definition. I was then able to expand my play on words as a poet. I think as a creative writer that is what makes writing interesting.

Around the same time I was always reading novels and chapter books that surpassed my reading level. This helped me to learn about words and context clues. Looking at the words around a word that I was unfamiliar with forced me to place the word into context without looking up the definition.

This helped expand my mind and imagination to become the writer I am today.
